Sounds for the Space Set

The RIAA (Robotic Intergalactic Astro-Artists) has released a collection of mash-ups blendifying classic electronic  music with all sorts of other audio diversionality. While I've pretty much had it with the whole mash up genre you can't deny  the source material is sweet. Here's a sample of what's sampled...

Anarchy in a Typical Dream Kitchen

Today's tunes of limited availability come from the sadly under-rated Frazier Chorus. In my ever changing list of all time favorite albums there are a couple of never changing constants - The Ian Broudie produced Frazier Chorus album Ray in always in my top ten and it's always the one nobody else has ever heard of. Damn shame that because this is the stuff - dark humor, crafty arrangements, brilliant songs, it's all there.

and here's a treat that should please the retro-modern crowd as well.. a nifty look at the promised Dream Kitchens of the past using the Frazier Chorus's wonderful Dream Kitchen for a soundtrack (whatever happened to my jet propelled omelette pan anyway?)

TV '64

The Republican Convention was held in San Fransisco , of all places, while the all-star game was played on the home diamond of baseball's lovable losers the New York Mets - an afternoon game broadcast by both the network and WOR. Channel 11 showed a soccer match between Greek and Polish teams.

Friday you could catch Satchmo on Jazz Casual while the Smother's Brothers joined Vic Damone and Red Buttons on The Hollywood Palace.

I scanned this to prove to my daughter that we really did only have a handful of channels back in the olden days before cable/satellite/internet. I've also become obsessed with The Wonderful World of Brother Buzz. I'm guessing it was a cartoon show hosted by a caffeine addicted monk. The Land Called New Jersey actually makes the garden state sound exotic. I wonder if the host made it out alive?

I used to assume these little cartoons, the likes of which can still be found in Sunday Circulars, were so emphaically unfunny because they had been running so long they'd simply run out of jokes to tell. This TV Tee Hee proves that even 40+ years ago the bottom of the barrel had been scraped dry.

Mystic Islands? according to Wikipedia...

"Mystic Islands was built in the early 60's as a Planned community. It also hosts a Volunteer Fire Company, a Strip mall now containing a TD Banknorth, Domino's Pizza, and other privately owned businesses, a gas station (now closed) and a small park, now just an open field. There is a second park with a baseball field, and a playground added in 2000. The homes are located on lagoon-front properties.

The "Mystic Islands Sign" was a giant curved sign reading "Mystic Island" that stretched across a block on Radio Road and E. Anchor Drive. The sign was taken down around the 70's prior to the construction of Upland Mystic, and now is the home to Munro's Marina."

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky : Never a huge Wilco fan. Always known they're a terrific outfit, quality goods all round, but I've never caught myself thinking "gosh, I could really go for a dose of Wilco right about now". Sky Blue Sky just might be the album that wins me over. Lovely craftsmanship, a gem. Recommended.

Elliot Smith - New Moon : Fine posthumous collection of Smith rarities. I usually suggest newcomers give rarity comps a wide berth - better to start off on the tried and true - but even a Smith neophyte will come away a true believer after a few spins. Recommended.

Rufus Wainwright - Release the Stars : Wonderful stuff. Highly recommended.

Keren Ann - Keren Ann:   Lovely as ever. Recommended.

Maximo Park - Our Earthly Pleasures : T'riffic '80's informed Britpop. Recommended.

Hats Off to the Buskers -The View: Shambolic but worthwhile debut from rockypunkers The View. Worth a spin.

Feist - The Reminder: Familiar in a good way. Not much new ground broken but who needs a broken garden. Recommended.

Warren Zevon  - Prelude : Remember what I said about newcomers steering clear of completist comps - here's a perfect example. Zevon fans need to hear these previously undiscovered rough gems but the uninitiated should look elsewhere .

Rush - Snakes and Arrows: Better than we could have possibly expected after all these years. Fans should love it.

schole compilation - Odd and beautiful Japanese import featuring  Akira Kosemura, Dom Mino', haruka nakamura, Lullatone and others. Highly recommended.

Rebecca Martin - Middlehope : Sultry, sweet, smart, quirky femmejazz. Lovely. Recommended.

TV '63

While leafing through some vintage TV logs it struck me how little our viewing habits and choices have changed over the years. Sure we've seen the slow painful death of the variety show and western plus the whole sorry reality TV explosion but looking back at the programs viewers in the early sixties had to choose from you would have thought we would have come a little bit further than we have - what with our hundreds of channels and so on.

On one random Sunday afternoon you had your pick of old movies complete with friendly hosts (just like TCM), plenty of kids cartoons like Felix the Cat and Bullwinkle (like Cartoon Network), lifestyle shows like Bridal Preview and Home Fair (HGTV), politics, sports - including high stakes card games (Bridge this time), educational shows,religious shows and even a program that sounds as if it could run on Logo today (I'll leave it to you to guess which one)
.

The worst part about pre-cable/satellite TV was the lack of a multi-tuner PVR - I can only imagine the anguish faced by thousands of Detroit's youngest citizens when they realized they'd need to choose either Uncle Walt, The Jetsons or Dennis the Menace at 7:30, knowing that once missed there was a good chance you'd never get to see a program again.

This was also the week for the Emmy's. How novel to have a TV awards show on towards the end of the TV season.

Welcome to the 73rd edition of Why Fidelity. Over the last couple of years I've posted (way) more than a hundred podcasts between Why Fidelity and various seasonal specials (Prof Ravensdeath and so on - check out the SensesWorkingOvertime archives for more info on my Halloween and Christmas shows) and it's been a real labor of love. Unfortunately love alone isn't enough anymore and I can no longer afford to run Why Fidelity as a loss leader. From now on it's going to have to grow up, move out of the house and start paying it's own way. That's where you come in...
