Lee at Music You (Possibly) Won't Hear Anywhere Else, has begun his Christmas sharity work with a Sleighlist (get it, Sleighlist, get it?) of vintage holiday goodness. Lee is a class act, a terrific writer (so don't skip over the words in a rush to get the music) and an amazingly generous collector of other-wise likely lost music. If you've visited his blog before you know what a treasure trove it is, if not then get over there pronto!

Christmas 2007 is here! My introductory essay

"...And there's the yearly ritual of not believing how early the Christmas displays and the Christmas music are coming out in the malls, on TV, on radio, etc. ("They're playing Christmas songs already?") This is invariably followed by Dickens- and Schultz-style complaining about the commercializing of Christmas, a process which presumably is still going on after Scrooge denounced the holiday in so many terms (by way of excusing his cold Yuletide heart). Those commercializers need to get their act together if it's been that long and they're STILL working on the plasticizing of Dec. 25.

Then there's the being-embarrassed-to-admit-that-you-have-a-favorite-Christmas-song ritual. "Sure, this is dreck/kitsch/fluff/garbage, but I heard it as a kid, so I'm excused." The implication being, of course, that our regular musical diet does NOT consist of dreck/kitsch/fluff/garbage, but, rather, great art music like Beck, Johnny Cash, Esquivel, Boxcar Willie, or The Stones..."

I goofed the other day when I first posted these links, and missed the list of Reality/Documentary/Food & Decorating shows that's also posted.

The hard working Christmas elf behind these lists isn't just a faceless intern or data entry drone but Diane Werts, the author of the pretty much definitive Christmas on Television, an absolutely indispensable member of my yuletide library...

...which explains why they are easily the most complete and useful holiday program lists available anywhere. Now if we could only get the network programmers  to use Diane's book as a resource for thier own seasonal offerings instead of tossing us endless re-runs of A Very Soapy Christmas and the  "Christmas" episodes of the same old tired sitcoms.

Why Fidelity 99 - Comin' Up Christmas Time

Some thing's in the air this year. Something slightly more Christmassy than usual. I've seen it discussed in more than a few places on the web and it's true - Christmas is coming a bit earlier this year. So, with many folk probably taking this pre-Thanksgiving weekend to start getting their yuletide plans up and running I give you the first of this season's holiday podcasts.

As with much of the music featured on Why Fidelity many (heck, most) of these songs have been shared out over the years by a small, but infinitely generous, group of sharity bloggers who have spent untold hours scouring Goodwill record crates, yard sales, obscure record shops and yes, even  eBay, for the finest, or sometimes funniest and freakiest, "lost" holiday music. It is to them I dedicate this year's jollifications. I simply can't imagine Christmas without many of the re-found sounds these intrepid collectors have unearthed and shared over the years. And now on with the show...

Here come the holidays!

November may have just begun but, around here, the recent death of Halloween was the unmistakable harbinger of Crimble's imminent arrival. For those unjolly souls who feel I'm jumping the festive gun I will have a few Thanksgiving posts up before long but, even as I plan out the family feast for Thanksgiving I'll always have Christmas in the back of my merry little mind.
