PBS Resurrects Monty Python

The six specials, which will air under the umbrella title of "Monty Python's Personal Best," will each focus on one member of the group. Clips from the "Flying Circus" and the Monty Python movies will be mixed in with new footage.

"PBS jumped at the chance to be the exclusive home to six new Monty Python specials," says John F. Wilson, co-chief programming executive for PBS. "American audiences first discovered the Pythons' upper-class twits, Lumberjack Song and dead parrot on public television, and we're looking forward to introducing more 'persistently silly' antics from these beloved characters."

Each of the five living Pythons will write and produce the special focusing on him, and they'll work together for the special on Chapman, who died in 1989.

10. David Tennant Though not officially confirmed, the BBC says he is "the only name being looked at" to be the next Doctor Who. Tennant is a classically trained, Scottish actor who has played the lead in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Romeo and Juliet. He is currently on British TV in the starring role of Casanova and will get even greater exposure as Barty Crouch Jr in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, due for release in cinemas later this year. Tennant has been in Doctor Who before: he voiced the role of the caretaker in the 2003 animation Doctor Who - Scream of the Shalka, in which the Doctor was voiced by Richard E Grant.

I haven't the patiance to sit through most late night talk shows and it seems a waste of Tivo space to record am hour long program just for a couple of minutes of monologue. I wish I'd known about this collection of late night gags long ago - the best of Leno, Letterman, Miller, Kimmel, Conan and Ferguson collected each night.

No "Dr. Who" Housecall for US?

The word over in the US however isn't so peachy. IGN Filmforce reports that major cable broadcaster The Sci-Fi Channel are NOT in negotiations for the new series with their sources saying "Sci Fi Channel has already had a chance at the new series and passed after viewing some of the completed episodes.  Some of the executives at the network found the series somewhat lacking and didn't think it would fit into the network's schedule."

Isn't this exactly why BBC America exists in the first place?  How about PBS - they're responsible, round these partts aty least, for creating countless Doctor Who fans with their frequext airings back in the day. Well, I'm sure we'll get it on DVD eventually if nothing else...

While most famous for the wonderful work he did on The Odd Couple and more recently for his efforts in the theater world my fondest memories of Tony Randall come from the romantic comedies he made in the 50's and 60's - flicks like Lover Come Back, Pillow Talk, Boy's Night Out and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?.

The world is slightly less wonderful today without him.

The Night Stalker is just about as good as 70's US TV horror got - actually a bit of a step down from the 60's and generally below the best of British efforts in the genre. Still this is really good stuff and well worth picking up - as would be any issue of the short lived TV series whichj was not always of as high a quality as the TV movies but which are certainly a lot of fun.

The Office - BBC America

The Office is being re-run from the begining over on BBC America.

I'm a life-long British Television fan. I've written hundreds of articles, reviews, and newsgroup and message forum rants on the subject so I'm thrilled a quality show from the UK is getting the attention, here in the States, that it deserves. Only I'm not much of an Office fan. It's a good enough show and Ricky Gervais is tremendously talanted but I simply can't warm to the program. I find it repetitious, predicatable and way too squirmy for my tastes. I don't find the constant, unavoidable and telegraphed ridicule of others all that amusung I suppose.

As it goes I much prefer Coupling, though the Office may be higher concept and have arguably better writing, Coupling was simply much funnier. The original British Coupling that is. The NBC version was the TV Equivalent of a Colonoscopy. Not at all funny.

Actually, someone could do a pretty interesting course on how to screw up a TV show by comparing and contrasting the two Couplings. The script for the pilot of the American version was a virtual clone of the UK series 1 opener. The UK version was pants-wettingly funny. The US version was about as funny as wetting your pants...in public. I laid the blame on the director if only because all the actors couldn't have all been that bad. They would have been better off simply copying the original performances - sort of a movie-karaoke deal.

If you haven't seen either The Office or the original Coupling they are both well worth seeking out.
